Pick n Save
The Kroger Company’s journey began in 1883 when Barney Kroger put his entire life savings of $372 on the line to open a single grocery store at 66 Pearl Street in Cincinnati. He lived by a straightforward principle: “Only sell what you would want for yourself.”
140 years later, Kroger still holds strong to Barney’s values of serving customers and the community with excellence, constantly innovating, and hiring the best people. As America’s largest grocer with over 2,800 stores spanning 35 states and operating under 28 different names, we strive to meet our customers’ ever-changing needs by making fresh food accessible to all.
Its approach is inspired by Barney Kroger’s commitment to fresh food, low prices, and innovation, which remains at the core of its mission today. This is the story of the people who shaped Kroger into what it is today and continue to make a difference in customers’ lives every day.

Sendik’s Food Market
The Balistreri family’s grocery store story dates back to 1926 when they arrived in Milwaukee from Sant’Elia, Sicily and started selling quality fruits and vegetables using a horse-drawn wagon. This started on the northeast side of Milwaukee, leading to the opening of produce markets on Oakland and Downer avenues.
In 1949, Grandpa Tom Balistreri, known fondly at Sendik’s as Mr. B, opened a third Sendik’s fruit and vegetable market on the corner of Silver Spring and Lake drives in Whitefish Bay, known for its honesty and integrity in treating customers and suppliers with respect.
The store’s success led to Tom being joined by his two sons, Ted and Tom Jr. In the early 1970s, the brothers took over the business, and in 1975, they expanded the store to include groceries, meat, deli, dairy, bakery, wine, and spirits.
During this time of growth, the store’s reputation for quality products and customer service flourished, attracting customers from all over Milwaukee and surrounding communities. In 2001, the third generation of family owners began to build upon the strong, 75-year legacy that Sendik’s had established as a trusted, local grocer.
